Ed Hirs is a recognized thought leader in energy economics, serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Houston and an inaugural UH Energy Fellow. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses focused on energy economics and is committed to preparing the next generation of leaders in the evolving energy landscape.
With deep expertise spanning energy markets, environmental policy, investment finance, ESG, and corporate governance, Ed’s career includes service in the Office of Conservation and Solar Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as work with independent power producers, renewable fuels, and oil & gas—all in roles ranging from consultant and dealmaker to executive.
Ed is a prolific writer and speaker, having authored numerous published opinion pieces and academic papers on energy and governance, many of which are featured on edhirs.com. His work with the Yale Graduates Energy Study Group has shaped energy discourse through well-researched, apolitical economic analysis. He also co-founded and co-chairs an annual energy conference at Yale University, reinforcing his commitment to academic-industry collaboration.
Ed frequently contributes to national and international media, offering clear-eyed perspectives on complex energy topics.
